The club is run on an ethos of encouraging paddlesports, including white water kayaking and canoeing, freestyle, standup paddleboarding and more, to a wide range of participants. We take the view that there’s nothing more mentally stimulating than spending time on the water in a natural environment, developing new skills, and just enjoying the outdoors in general.

Whether you’re aiming to push yourself on white water, throw the latest freestyle tricks, or just want a relaxing paddle along a river or a lake, Telford Canoe Club can cater to you. Run by experienced British Canoeing qualified coaches and guides, the club can take you safely on your journey from beginner onwards in an enthusiastic, safe and encouraging environment.

With permanent facilities and car park based right next to the River Severn’s Jackfield rapids, we run regular club nights and social BBQ’s during the long summer evenings, along with weekend trips and sessions at Jackfield, the river Dee in North Wales, and manmade venues such as Cardiff International Whitewater. During the Autumn and Winter, white water season opens up in the UK, and we run trips to suitable rivers around the country, weather and water levels depending.

A brief history of Telford Canoe Club

Telford Canoe Club was originally started by a few keen enthusiasts in the early 60’s from a hut just below the Black Swan pub. In the ’80s it became apparent that the hut was falling into the river and not going to last. Dale end park was used for a while and some years later the hut and the bungalow next to it was lost to the river.

A lease was agreed for the current site at Jackfield rapids in 1987. Roads, parking, toilets and the containers were all added with the help of the local army reserves.

In past years the club has been very active and organised 40 national ranking slaloms, 15 national ranking river races, and has taken part in and organised the new town games as well as building an active and thriving club.
